Tower of London: The White Tower and the Bloody Tower

The Tower of London was founded by William the Conqueror shortly after 1066, and the great White Tower was completed around the year 1097. It is still the oldest surviving castle building in England. Across the centuries the Tower has been a royal palace, a prison, an armoury, a mint and a place of execution. It was here that Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII, was beheaded on 19 May 1536, by an executioner summoned all the way from France because he wielded a sword rather than an axe.

By tradition the Tower is the most haunted place in England. The shade of Anne Boleyn is said to walk around the tower carrying her own head under her arm, and she is said to have been glimpsed by the chapel where she lies buried. An officer claimed in 1864 to have seen a figure near the tower and called the guard. Others speak of the vanished princes, of a glowing shape that hovered over a woman's shoulder in 1817, and of a sentry said to have died of fright after a bear like figure rushed at him. Much of this rests on second hand sources and the retellings of later writers, so take it for what it is. But stand still inside the walls for a moment. Few places in Europe have seen so many powerful people led in alive and carried out dead.
