White Rose still waits for the ambassador who never came back — leaving small wet footprints on floors that have just dried, night after night.
Behind the walls of the Dutch mission on İstiklal Caddesi walks a woman Istanbul calls Beyaz Gül, the White Rose. The legend says that in the 18th century she lived at Ambassador Calkoen's side and was left behind when he was posted to Dresden. Again and again she is said to have returned to the gate to ask whether he had come home, until grief took her — and since then this is the house she will not leave. Consuls and staff have repeated the same details for generations: windows that swing open by themselves, and small wet footprints appearing on floors that have only just dried, as if someone barefoot had passed a moment earlier. A stone in the garden now commemorates her, and a white rose is laid before it. Staff still place one there today.
