Pera Palace Hotel, Room 411
Istanbul · Turkiet · Hotel
A medium named room 411 before the television cameras — and under the floor lay, sure enough, the key to Christie's eleven vanished days.
Agatha Christie stayed at the Pera Palace whenever she was in Istanbul, and room 411 carries her name. In 1926 she disappeared for eleven days and never explained where she had been. Decades later, long after her death, the medium Tamara Rand claimed to have reached the writer during a series of seances: the secret of the missing days was hidden in room 411, under the floor. On 7 March 1979 Turkish and foreign journalists gathered there with television cameras — and a rusted key really was produced, exactly where the medium had said it would be. What it opened, nobody ever learned. No document has ever supported the story, and it survives as the hotel's own legend. The room can still be booked, and the key remains in the hotel's keeping.
