High above Anadolu Kavağı, where the Bosphorus opens toward the Black Sea, stand the ruins of a Byzantine castle with two enormous towers. The Greeks called the place Hieron, the sacred, and sailors made offerings here before heading into open water. Myth says Jason raised an altar on this headland in thanks when he returned with the Golden Fleece. But the district already had a reputation. Here ruled Amykos, king of the Bebryces, who forced every stranger who came ashore to face him in a boxing match and killed them all — until the Argonauts passed by and Polydeukes accepted the challenge and struck him down in his own ring. Ever since, the mouth of the strait has been called the gates of the gods. Up among the broken walls stand two nameless gravestones, and the wind never drops.
