Minxiong Ghost House (Liu Family Mansion)
Chiayi län · Taiwan · Haunted house
In the banyan-strangled Liu mansion a maid is said to have thrown herself into the well – and in 1949 a soldier fired wildly at a ghost and hit his own comrade.
The three-storey brick mansion from 1929, built by landlord Liu Rongru outside Minxiong in Chiayi, is Taiwan's most notorious haunted house. According to the most widespread legend a maidservant threw herself into the courtyard well in despair, and her spirit is said to linger by the water still. When soldiers were quartered in the house in 1949, a sentry reportedly saw a ghost outside the window; in the ensuing panic shots were fired that killed one of their own – the bullet holes are still pointed out in the walls. The family eventually abandoned the house, and banyan roots have since wound their way through windows and staircases. Today the curious make pilgrimages here, with a café conveniently located next to the ghost house.
