By tradition, the limestone caves outside Tanga are home to the mizimu spirits – and the rebel Otango is said never to have left his hideout.

The Amboni Caves north of Tanga are East Africa's most extensive limestone cave system, and local belief holds that spirit beings called mizimu have dwelt there since time immemorial. In the chamber of spirits, Mzimuni, women still lay down offerings and pray for fertility, as the Bondei people have done for generations. One story tells that in 1941 a foreign visitor defied the warnings, went too deep with his dog and never came out. In the 1950s the rebel Otango hid in the tunnels between his night raids; he was shot in 1958, but many remain convinced he could not be killed and still lurks somewhere in the dark.
