Lychakiv in Lviv is one of Europe's oldest burial grounds, with over 300,000 graves among lime trees and crumbling burial chapels. For generations, those walking the street along its wall at night have told of a woman in black clothes who has no face. Inside the cemetery, the painter Artur Grottger and his fiancée Wanda Monné are said to stroll arm in arm along the avenues before dissolving into the air – she sold her jewellery to bring his body home to Lviv. At the Zamoyski family chapel, where a mother and daughter rest after a fire in 1902, visitors have heard the rattle of the chains from which the coffins hang.
