This theatre at Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania is named for Emma Guffey Miller, and the students believe she is the one in the building.

Banging and pounding are heard, and when anybody goes to look there is nobody there. The lights flicker and go out during rehearsals.

The students began a tradition in response to her, which is the part worth keeping. Theatre companies do this: they establish a small ritual, honour whoever is understood to be in the building, and pass it to the next cohort.

Emma Guffey Miller was a real and formidable person. She was a suffragist, campaigned for the Equal Rights Amendment for decades, was the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for president at a major party convention, and she was still fighting for it in her nineties.

A theatre named after her would be an odd place to be quiet in.

The building is in use by the university.
