During the summer of 1965, several of the children of Bradfordsville, Kentucky heard a sound coming from the North Rolling Fork River, which runs parallel to the streets of the town.

They described it as very like a whip being cracked.

If you went towards the river looking for where it was coming from, the sound got quieter.

That is the whole account and it is one of the most carefully described in this archive. It is not a figure, a light or a feeling. It is a specific noise with a specific behaviour, reported by more than one child in the same summer, and the behaviour is backwards from what sound normally does.
