Landmark Tavern

New York · USA · Pub · Skrekk 3/5

A Confederate soldier bled out in the upstairs bathtub, an Irish girl died of cholera in the next room – at the Landmark Tavern the dead still drink on credit.

When the Landmark Tavern opened in 1868 on Eleventh Avenue, the Hudson River nearly lapped at its doorstep, and sailors and dockworkers drank their way through Hell's Kitchen's rough nights. Staff point to three lingering regulars. A Confederate soldier knifed in a bar brawl was carried upstairs and bled to death in a bathtub that still stands there – guests report heavy boots on the floorboards and water rippling on its own. An Irish immigrant girl who died of cholera in one of the boarding rooms appears as a pale figure on the staircase. And actor George Raft, raised in the neighborhood, is said to look in on the bar he loved. Bottles shift on the shelves, and glasses of whiskey appear that no one ordered.
