Amid the row houses of Marine Park stands one of Brooklyn's last Dutch farmhouses, built in 1800 by Hendrick I. Lott around his grandfather's cottage of 1720. The Lotts freed their enslaved workers early, and when archaeologists examined the attic they found a concealed closet hidden behind another – believed to be an Underground Railroad hiding place for people escaping slavery. Beneath the floorboards of the slave quarters lay something stranger still: corncobs and bones arranged in patterns, West African spirit bundles meant to bar evil from the house. The house then stood empty for decades with a reputation that the family had never left: passersby saw lights wandering between windows, and today's open houses and paranormal tours bring reports of attic footsteps, self-closing doors, and an old woman at the garden-facing window.
