On January 2, 1800, her body was pulled from the Manhattan Company's wooden well in Lispenard's Meadow. Her secret fiancé, carpenter Levi Weeks, faced the first fully recorded murder trial in the United States – and was acquitted by an unmatched defense team: Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, side by side four years before their duel. No one was ever convicted. The well was forgotten until it turned up inside a building's foundations – today it stands preserved in the basement of a clothing store at 129 Spring Street. Employees over the years have described a woman in period dress, toppled clothing racks and cries with no source.
