In Aaron Burr's old carriage house, unseen hands tear earrings from women's ears – the vice president who killed Hamilton never seems to have left.

This candlelit restaurant at 17 Barrow Street in Greenwich Village occupies an 18th-century carriage house once owned by Aaron Burr – the vice president who shot Alexander Hamilton in their 1804 duel and died ostracized and broke. Staff count some twenty spirits in the building, but two dominate: Burr himself, blamed for chairs sliding out, pictures tilting and glasses flying off shelves, and his beloved daughter Theodosia, who vanished at sea in 1813 while sailing to visit her father. She is said to be the one who pinches female diners' ears and pulls off their earrings – as if still searching for something she lost. Waiters speak of cold drafts on the stairs and shadows crossing the fireplace when the dining room stands empty.
