Actor Edwin Booth, the most celebrated Hamlet of his age, carried all his life the burden of being brother to Lincoln's assassin. In 1888 he turned his Gramercy Park home into The Players, a club where actors could mingle as gentlemen, keeping only a bedroom on the top floor. There he died in 1893 – and the room has been left untouched ever since, his pipes, books and a skull from a production of Yorick still in place. Members and staff describe creaking footsteps in the stairwell at night, the scent of pipe tobacco outside the locked room, and a gaunt figure in dark clothes glimpsed in the library. Booth is said to be a quiet host who makes sure his club behaves – but he still walks his nightly rounds.
