The unfinished Ritz Carlton, Longboat Key

Florida · USA · Hotel

John Ringling began a luxury hotel on New Pass in the 1920s and never finished it. A worker brought his young son to the site.

In the early 1920s John Ringling, of the circus, bought a large stretch of the south end of Longboat Key in Florida. He laid out a golf course and began building a luxury hotel, the Ritz Carlton, on New Pass.

It was never completed. The Florida land boom collapsed, and the shell stood on the key for decades.

The account attached concerns a worker on the site who brought his young son with him.

What happened to the boy is the reason the ruin was remembered as anything other than a failed investment.

An unfinished luxury hotel, roofless and open to the Gulf, standing for half a century on an island that was otherwise scrub and beach, is an image that would generate stories regardless. The structure was eventually cleared and the land developed.
