Ridge Home

Colorado · USA · Haunted site

An institution for children up to eighteen, closed in the 1970s and since demolished. What was heard there was children playing, and a girl crying in one.

The institution at Wheat Ridge, Colorado held children up to the age of eighteen. It closed in the 1970s and the buildings have since been pulled down.

While they stood, what people reported hearing was children playing, and a girl crying in one of the rooms. Dark shapes were also described.

What these places were needs saying. State institutions for children with developmental disabilities took in sons and daughters whose families were told, by doctors, to put them away and forget them. Many arrived as toddlers. Contact with families fell away. Staffing was thin and oversight thinner, and the record across American institutions of this type in these decades includes serious neglect.

Colorado closed Ridge as part of the national move away from institutional care, and that move was right.

The children who were here were not characters in a story. Nothing remains on the site.
