Hockomock Swamp
Massachusetts · USA · Haunted site
At the centre of what is called the Bridgewater Triangle. Witnesses describe a child's hands reaching out of the water, and canoes on it at night.
Hockomock Swamp lies in south eastern Massachusetts and sits at the centre of an area known as the Bridgewater Triangle, which has collected more reported anomalies than anywhere else in New England.
Strange sounds are heard there late at night. Apparitions of a child's hands reaching out of the water have been described, and local account holds that a child drowned there many years ago.
Canoes have been reported on the water at night, and figures in them, understood locally as the Wampanoag people whose land this is and who fought a war across this ground in the 1670s.
The name Hockomock is itself Algonquian, and the swamp was a refuge during that war and a place of considerable significance long before it.
Additional information supplied in March 2008 sets out the wider Triangle. The swamp is protected wetland, difficult and dangerous to enter, and it is not a place to go looking.
