Sensabaugh Tunnel
Tennessee · USA · Haunted site
Built in the early 1920s at Kingsport, Tennessee. Drivers who stop inside and switch the engine off report that it will not start again.
Sensabaugh Tunnel was built in the early 1920s near Kingsport, Tennessee, and it is among the best known haunted sites in that part of the state. A stream runs through it.
Two accounts attach to it. The first holds that a man named Sensabaugh killed his entire family in the stream inside the tunnel, and that his infant can still be heard crying there. The second describes a woman and her child who pulled into the tunnel to shelter from a bad storm and were found dead the following day.
An addition from January 2007 qualifies parts of the story, and it should be said plainly that neither killing has been established from any public record. The Sensabaugh family were real and locally known, which is how their name became attached.
The test everyone repeats is the same one told at haunted tunnels across America. Drive in, stop, switch off the engine, and it will not start again. The tunnel is narrow, single track, on a public road, and stopping in it is genuinely dangerous for reasons that have nothing to do with ghosts.
