The Bloody Pond

Tennessee · USA · Haunted site

Wounded men crawled to this pond to drink during the fighting. On certain days, when the light falls a particular way, the water still looks red.

During the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, wounded and dying men from both armies crawled to a pond on this field to drink and to cool themselves in the heat.

The water ran red with them, and the place has been called the Bloody Pond ever since.

On certain days, when the sun strikes it at the right angle, visitors say the water looks red still.

Shiloh was the first battle that told Americans what this war was going to be. Around twenty three thousand men were killed, wounded or missing in two days, more casualties than in all previous American wars combined, and both sides were shocked into silence by it. Grant wrote afterwards that he gave up any hope of saving the Union by anything short of complete conquest.

The pond is small, and standing beside it is the most sobering few minutes on the field.

The battlefield is a national military park and is open.
