Pickman House

Massachusetts · USA · House

A small girl stands at the second-floor window and is gone when you look again — and children's voices are heard inside the empty house after dark.

Pickman House on Charter Street, next door to Salem's oldest burying ground, is counted among the town's oldest dwellings. Its legend concerns an eighteenth-century family whose father lost his reason, claimed to see demons in the rooms, shut his daughter in the attic and finally destroyed the whole household. It is the girl people say they meet. Visitors photograph the second-floor window and afterwards find a small figure in the glass; staff locking up for the night describe children's voices talking quietly inside the empty house, and points of light drifting through the rooms. Nobody claims she means harm — she is mostly described as someone waiting to be noticed.
