The pond still carries Wilmot Redd's name — the woman her neighbours blamed when milk soured and butter turned to blue wool.

Redd's Pond lies just below Old Burial Hill and takes its name from Wilmot Redd, a Marblehead fisherman's wife whose cottage stood beside the water. She was the only person from the town executed in 1692. The charges against her were village gossip turned into evidence: that milk soured in the neighbours' pails, that butter would never set, that what was churned came out as blue wool — small daily mishaps that a whole community finally laid on one woman. She was hanged on 22 September 1692, innocent. Children skate on the pond in winter now, and the name is almost all that remains of her here. Marblehead has no grave to visit; the pond is the memorial.
