The fortune teller they called Witch Wonderful foretold her own death — and is still said to walk the rocks above the cave where she lies buried.

Swallow Cave lies in the rocks at the end of Swallow Cave Road, out at the tip of Nahant. The legend belongs to King Philip's War in 1675, when a party of warriors paddled up from Cape Cod and raided Lynn. They were driven out onto Nahant and hid, and it was the Salem fortune teller the neighbourhood called Witch Wonderful who told the settlers where they were — inside the cave. Shortly afterwards she foretold her own death, and within a fortnight she was gone. She was buried on the height above the cave, and that is where she is said to be seen: a woman's figure walking the rocks and the shoreline at dusk. The cave can only be reached at low tide and is easy to miss.
