Spook Bridge
Georgia · USA · Bridge
Take the highway west, turn at the caution light before Quitman, then the first dirt road on the left. It ends at a bridge that is no longer used.
Near the county line outside Valdosta, Georgia, a dirt road runs off the highway and dead ends at an old bridge over water that has not carried traffic for a long time.
You park at the dead end and walk.
The reputation is that it was used for rituals many years ago.
That claim attaches itself to almost every abandoned bridge in the American south and is almost never supported. What is genuinely there is graffiti, broken glass and a long history of teenagers, which is what an isolated dead end road produces.
The practical points matter more here than the story. The bridge is derelict, the decking is unsound, the water below is deep and the banks are steep, and this is south Georgia, where the water has alligators and snakes in it.
It is private land and access is restricted.
