The White Lady of Spring Canyon

Utah · USA · Prison

The canyon above Helper holds several ghost towns. Latuda and Standardville were coal camps, and the stone houses, the shops and the jail are still there.

Spring Canyon above Helper, Utah holds several ghost towns, including Latuda and Standardville, which were coal mining communities.

A good deal is still standing: homesteads built of stone, the remains of shops, the old jail.

The White Lady is seen at one of the houses, and she is described in white.

The canyons above Helper were among the deadliest coal fields in the country. The Winter Quarters disaster of 1900, a few miles from here, killed around two hundred men and boys in a single explosion, and Castle Gate in 1924 killed a hundred and seventy two. The men who died were Greek, Italian, Japanese, Welsh and Finnish immigrants, and the camps emptied when the mines closed.

Helper is named for the extra locomotives coupled on at this station to push trains up the grade.

The canyon is accessible but the ruins are unsafe and some of the land is private.
