On 11 July 1869 the cavalry caught the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers here. Two white captives were in the camp. One survived.

On 11 July 1869 United States cavalry and Pawnee scouts surprised a camp of Cheyenne Dog Soldiers at Summit Springs in Colorado.

The Dog Soldiers had taken two white women captive in Kansas earlier that year. When the attack came, both were shot in the camp. One died and is buried overlooking the battlefield. The other survived.

Around fifty Cheyenne were killed, including their leader Tall Bull. Women and children were among the dead.

The engagement effectively ended Dog Soldier resistance on the central plains, and it is remembered very differently depending on who is telling it. To the army it was a rescue. To the Cheyenne it was the destruction of a people already being driven off their land.

Both things are true and neither cancels the other.
