The brig at Farragut

Idaho · USA · Prison

More than three hundred thousand servicemen passed through this Idaho naval base. The brig is the only original building left standing.

Farragut Naval Training Station in Idaho was one of the largest in the world during the Second World War. More than three hundred thousand servicemen passed through it, on an inland lake a very long way from any ocean.

A homicide and at least one suicide are recorded there during the war years, which for a population that size over that period is unremarkable and no less real for it.

The brig is the only original building still standing on what is now a state park and campground.

Several figures have been reported inside it, and the descriptions given are consistent with one another.

A brig is where men were held for offences that in civilian life would have been nothing. Farragut closed at the end of the war and the buildings came down. This one was kept.
