The Chicken Box on Nantucket began as an actual chicken coop, served as a speakeasy through Prohibition, and is now one of the island's best known bars.

Nantucket in winter is a particular place. The summer population leaves, the ferries run less often, and a few thousand people are left on a sandbar thirty miles out in the Atlantic. Anything seen in a car park in January is seen by very few witnesses and cannot be checked against a crowd.

The island's earlier history is whaling, which sent men away for three and four years at a time and frequently did not send them back.
