The mill complex beside the Cocheco River at Dover, New Hampshire caught fire many years ago. Much of it burned and a number of people were killed.
What is described now comes from outside the buildings, after dark, once everyone has gone and the offices are closed.
Lights appear in the higher rooms. Sounds are heard that witnesses identify as machinery.
The New England textile mills ran on long hours in buildings packed with dry cotton and lit by open flame, and fires in them killed workers regularly through the nineteenth century. A great many of those workers were young women who had come from farms to live in the company boarding houses beside the river.
The complex has been converted to offices and apartments and is occupied.
