The site of the Montrose House in Pennsylvania has been in continuous use far longer than the current building. The original inn served as the town's first jail, as its funeral home before there was one, and at one point as a school room.

That building burned to the ground in the mid 1920s. The replacement burned too, when it was around ninety percent complete. The inn standing on the site today was finished around 1926.

What guests describe is upstairs. A small boy moves along the hall at all hours and plays tricks on people, and he appears to favour room five. More than one guest has reported someone knocking and no one being there when the door was opened. One complained at breakfast about the child staying at the inn who had disturbed them during the night, which is the version of this story that staff at old hotels tend to remember longest, because there was no child booked in.
