Turner and Stevens Mortuary

California · USA · Haunted site

Three of them in an Alhambra funeral home, and one of them is standing between the other two.

Turner and Stevens was one of the long established funeral businesses of the San Gabriel Valley, and the Alhambra premises have the reputation. What sets this entry apart from most is that the people who work there have not left it as a collection of odd events. They have worked out who is in the building and what is going on between them, and they all tell the same version.

There are three. An old woman, a small boy, and a man. The woman is described as unpleasant and as wanting the boy. The man is described as standing in the way. That is the arrangement, and staff account for what happens in the building by reference to it: doors slamming when nothing has moved, books coming off a shelf hard enough to cross the room and pass close to somebody, footsteps in a corridor that is empty when you look down it.

The corridor is the part people remember. It has mirrors facing one another along both walls, which does something to the eye at the best of times. Staff walking through it have seen the woman or the man in the reflection, off to the side and slightly behind, present long enough to be recognised as one or the other, and gone by the time the head has turned. The boy is not seen in the mirrors. This is a working funeral home and families use it. Do not turn up asking.
