Lydia's Bridge

North Carolina · USA · Bridge

Since 1923 drivers on the old Highway 70 underpass at Jamestown, North Carolina have described picking up a girl in a white gown who never gets out of

The underpass sits on the old US Highway 70 alignment just outside Greensboro, North Carolina, and the story attached to it goes back to 1923. Drivers describe a young woman standing at the roadside in a white evening gown, waving both arms for someone to stop.

Those who pull over meet a girl who gives her name as Lydia. She asks to be taken to an address in High Point, explains that she has been at a dance in Raleigh, and says her car has given out on the way home. She talks the whole journey. As the car reaches the house, she is no longer in it. The door never opens.

Versions differ, as they always do with a story this old. The one told most often in the area holds that Lydia was struck and killed by a car on her way home from that dance, and has been trying to finish the journey ever since. It is one of the most widely reported vanishing hitchhiker cases in the American South, and the underpass still carries her name.
