Voices and murmuring are said to be heard in the corridors and boxes of the Teatro Solís long after the audience has gone home, and staff working late tell of creaking in the woodwork, cold draughts and the sense that someone is still sitting in the dark up in the tiers. The stories have become part of the house's own mythology and are retold on Montevideo's ghost walks.

The theatre opened in 1856 and is Uruguay's proudest stage, with more than a century and a half of premieres behind its neoclassical columns. The auditorium seats almost a thousand across four tiers of boxes — plenty of room for an audience that never gets up to leave.
