The architect's burning kiss seared a mark onto Tamerlane's queen — and according to legend cost him his life.

While Tamerlane was campaigning in India, his favourite wife Bibi-Khanym had the empire's greatest mosque built as a surprise for his return. The architect fell blindly in love with the queen and stalled the work until she agreed to his condition: a single kiss. The kiss was so hot it seared a mark onto her cheek, and when Timur returned he saw the trace at once. Legend says he had the architect killed — in one version the man leapt from the minaret and flew away on wings he had built himself. The mosque, one of the largest in Islam, soon began to crack, as if carrying its own punishment.
