Bà Đen Mountain

Tây Ninh · Vietnam · Natural site

On the Black Lady's mountain, faithful Thiên Hương is said to appear still — a woman in black guiding lost wanderers home.

Núi Bà Đen, the Black Lady's Mountain, rises alone from the plains of Tây Ninh and carries one of southern Vietnam's best-loved legends. The devout girl Lý Thị Thiên Hương is said to have been ambushed on the mountain and to have thrown herself from the cliff rather than be dishonoured; she later appeared in a monk's dream with a darkened face, and when her body was found it was untouched by decay. As Bà Đen she became the mountain's guardian spirit, and pilgrims still tell of a woman in black glimpsed in the mist, guiding those lost among the trails — and lingering by the cliff where she once fell.
