Around Easter, a young woman in dark clothes is still said to thumb a lift on the road to Willowmore – until she dissolves into thin air in the back seat.

Over the Easter weekend of 1968, Maria Charlotte Roux was killed when her fiancé's Volkswagen overturned on the road between Uniondale and Willowmore in the Little Karoo. Since the mid-1970s, motorists have told of a young woman who hitches a ride along this stretch, climbs into the car and then vanishes without a trace a few kilometres on, often near the Barandas turn-off. Witnesses describe car doors opening and closing by themselves, a sudden chill in the cabin and laughter from the empty back seat. The Uniondale hitchhiker is now South Africa's most famous road ghost.
