Hero of Waterloo
New South Wales · Australia · Pub
In Sydney's oldest stone pub, Anne Kirkman — pushed to her death down the stairs in 1849 — still plays the piano at night.
The Hero of Waterloo in Millers Point was built by convicts in 1843 and is often called Australia's most haunted pub. Legend holds that in 1849 publican Thomas Kirkman pushed his wife Anne down the stairs to her death, and she has never left the building. At night, classical piano music drifts from the empty bar — stopping the moment anyone comes down — and in the mornings chairs are found turned to face the cold fireplace. The cellars still hold shackles in the walls and the remains of a smugglers' tunnel, through which drunken patrons are said to have been dragged aboard ships and press-ganged to sea.
