Sarajevo's magnificent city hall is said to rest under a curse – misfortune has followed the building ever since its cornerstone was laid.

The Moorish-inspired city hall, inaugurated in 1896, is Sarajevo's most magnificent building – and by the city's whispers, its most ill-fated. Already during construction a worker is said to have been crushed by a falling cement tub, and it was from here that Archduke Franz Ferdinand set out on his final journey before the shots rang out in 1914, just a stone's throw away. When the building later became the national library, several of its directors died before their time, one by his own hand. Over the years guards and staff have told of shrieks, noises and shadows moving through the restored halls in the evenings – as if the building's misfortune had settled into its walls.
