Panam Nagar
Dhaka Division (Sonargaon) · Bangladesh · Abandoned site
In the abandoned merchant town of Panam Nagar, the spirits of wealthy traders are said to still roam their crumbling mansions.
Panam Nagar in Sonargaon was a thriving quarter of Hindu textile merchants in the 19th century, its ornate townhouses standing shoulder to shoulder along a single street. With Partition in 1947 and the unrest of 1964–65, the inhabitants fled to India and the town was left to decay – locals simply call it the ghost city. Visitors tell of footsteps in empty stairwells, whispers from the ruins and the sense of being watched from the gaping windows. Local legend has it the merchants' spirits still search for the fortunes they were forced to leave behind.
