One Christmas Eve in Bætten the men sat drinking, cursing and playing cards. An unknown man came in and joined the game, but when a card fell and someone bent down, he was seen clinging to the table leg with hideous bear's claws on his feet. Terrified, they seized the Bible and fetched the priest, who after great effort drove out the Evil One. He took a man with him who had to follow all the way to the parish boundary, and after that the gaming and drinking in Bætten came to an end.
