Graycliff counts among the most haunted houses in Nassau, and it is the staircase people talk about: staff and guests tell of figures glimpsed at the top, footsteps in empty corridors and a presence that never checked out. Beneath the building also winds a colonial-era escape tunnel, now shown on the city's ghost tours with tales of murder and disappearance.

The house was built in the 1740s by the privateer captain John Howard Graysmith, who waged his own war on Spanish shipping from the rise above the harbour, and has since served as a private mansion, a British garrison and a luxury hotel. Three centuries of Bahamian history lie in the walls — and by its guests' account, not all of them are over.
