Pretty Molly Bay
Little Exuma · Bahamas · Natural site
By moonlight on Little Exuma's white sand, Pretty Molly is still said to walk the water's edge – the girl the sea took and never gave back.
Pretty Molly Bay on Little Exuma takes its name from one of the Bahamas' best-known beach legends. The story tells of Molly, a young enslaved woman who one night walked straight into the sea to escape her life in bondage – and ever since, her figure is said to wander the shoreline on moonlit nights. In a gentler version of the tale she lives on as a mermaid with a shimmering tail, watching over the bay. Islanders still tell both versions today, and the beach bears her name on the map.
