By the cursed lake of Mir Castle appears Sonechka – the twelve-year-old princess who became the lake's first victim.

The Renaissance castle of Mir, today a UNESCO World Heritage site, carries one of Belarus's best-known ghost stories. When Prince Nikolai Svyatopolk-Mirsky had the castle's apple orchard felled to dig a lake, a worker died during the felling, and his mother cursed the water: one person would drown for every tree cut down. The first victim was the prince's twelve-year-old daughter Sofia, known as Sonechka – and a few years later the prince himself was found dead on the shore. Sonechka appears as a translucent girl in white by the gate tower and the family crypt, and museum staff have seen her walking the vaults at night.
