Grace Ceperley is said to sweep up the staircase of her beloved Fairacres — aggrieved over a will that was never honoured.

The Fairacres mansion at Deer Lake was built in 1909–1911 for Grace Ceperley, who loved its gardens and doted on local children. Her will demanded that if the house were ever sold, the proceeds should fund a children's playground — but when Fairacres changed hands in 1922, the money never materialised. Ever since, Grace is said to roam the house, now the Burnaby Art Gallery: she has been seen floating up the stairs in flowing dresses while upstairs windows open on their own and a trace of perfume lingers. The mansion's 1950s interlude as home to an occult sect has done nothing to soften its reputation.
