The architect murdered by his wife's young lover is said to roam his own masterpiece by Victoria's harbour, cane in hand.

The Fairmont Empress on Victoria's Inner Harbour opened in 1908, designed by star architect Francis Rattenbury. Rattenbury left his wife for a younger woman and moved to England, where in 1935 he was bludgeoned to death by the couple's teenage chauffeur — who was also his new wife's lover. Ever since, guests and staff alike describe a slender, moustached man with a cane on the staircases and in the corridors, as if the architect had returned to his most famous work. An early-1900s chambermaid is also said to continue her rounds on one of the floors.
