Five Fishermen
Nova Scotia · Kanada · Restaurant
In the restaurant that served as a morgue for the Titanic's dead, glasses fly off shelves and taps turn on by unseen hands.
The Five Fishermen on Argyle Street in Halifax occupies an 1817 building that began as a schoolhouse — and for a time housed the Snow & Co funeral parlour. Bodies were brought here after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, and five years later coffins were stacked outside the building following the devastating Halifax Explosion. Since the restaurant opened, staff have described glasses hurled from shelves, cutlery falling, taps turning on by themselves, swinging doors slamming and voices calling their names in empty rooms. Many diners come precisely in the hope of experiencing something.
