Spiesshof — Basel-Stadt · Switzerland · House

In the Renaissance palace on Heuberg, heretic David Joris is said to walk again – the man burned at the stake only after his death.

Behind the Spiesshof's splendid Renaissance facade in Basel's old town, the 16th-century sect leader David Joris hid under a false name, living as a distinguished merchant. Only three years after his death in 1556 was the deception exposed – whereupon the city had his corpse dug up and burned at the stake along with his writings. Ever since, the heretic's spirit is said never to have left the house. Employees in the building have told of doors creaking open on their own and beams groaning when no one is there.
