The Zhongyin Building, Shenzhen

Shenzhen, Guangdong · China · House

Shenzhen's blood-red tower is said to be painted to keep the spirits of an old execution ground in — or out.

In the middle of Shenzhen's glittering Futian district stands the Zhongyin Building, the city's only entirely dark-red skyscraper, crowned with a needle-sharp spire. By the city's most stubborn tale, it was built over an old firing range and execution ground, its colour and spire chosen to subdue the anger of the dead. The 21st floor is notorious: taps running in empty bathrooms, lifts stopping there though no one pressed the button, and a white figure glimpsed in the corridor. Companies that move in are said to suffer the six-month curse — few tenants, the story goes, last any longer.
