Central Cemetery of Bogotá
Bogotá · Colombia · Cemetery
At Bogotá's oldest cemetery, wishes are whispered into a dead brewer's ear – and the nights fill with sorcery.
Colombia's national cemetery of 1836 holds presidents, poets and magnates behind its whitewashed walls. The place is famed for witchcraft, miracles and apparitions: at night, strange lights and shadows are reported among the mausoleums, and remnants of rituals turn up between the graves. At the bronze statue of beer magnate Leo Kopp, visitors queue to whisper wishes into his ear, convinced the dead industrialist walks again to grant them. Ghost tours now guide the curious through the burial quarters.
