In the Black Forest's darkest mountain lake, the lake king is said to rule his nymphs – and whoever mocks the deep is punished by the water itself.

The Mummelsee is a small, almost circular glacial lake on the Black Forest High Road, nestled beneath the dark slopes of the Hornisgrinde. According to legends recorded by the Brothers Grimm among others, this is the home of the Mummelsee King and his water maidens – the 'Mümmlein' – who rose at night to dance in the villages but always had to return before midnight. Those who lingered were punished: one nymph who came back late is said to have been dragged into the deep, whereupon a stain of blood rose to the surface. The lake was believed bottomless, and anyone who shouted or threw stones into it might see the water darken and seethe. To this day the lake is wrapped in mist and stories.
