The Pied Piper of Hamelin is one of the world's most famous legends – and it rests on a real, dated event. According to the town's oldest chronicles, 130 of Hamelin's children disappeared on 26 June 1284, 'on the day of John and Paul', led away by a man in colourful clothes who had earlier been cheated of his fee for piping the town's rats into the Weser. The children followed his flute out through the Ostertor and were never seen again. On Bungelosenstrasse, the street where the children are said to have left the town, playing music and dancing is forbidden to this day – a ban respected even by wedding processions. The Rattenfängerhaus of 1602 keeps the memory of that dark day alive.
